Install the Power Supply

A technician may be required to replace or install a power supply, as shown in Figure 3-1. Most power supplies can fit only one way in the computer case. Usually, three or four screws attach the power supply to the case. Power supplies have fans that can vibrate and loosen screws that are not secured. When installing a power supply, make sure that all the screws are used and that they are properly tightened.

Secure the power supply to the case using the proper screws.

    1. First, turn off the computer system and unplug all power cords from the back of the computer.
    2. Open the computer case and locate the power supply.
    3. Disconnect all of the cables connected to the old power supply. This includes power cables, SATA cables, PCI Express cables, and other cables connected to audio and USB ports.
    4. Unscrew the power supply from the case.
    5. Insert the new power supply and reconnect all of the cables.
    6. Close the computer case, plug in the power cables, and power on the system.
    7. Test the new power supply to ensure everything is working properly.

      1. Unplug all cables from the back of the desktop computer and ensure that the power switch on the back of the case is off.
      2. Remove the power supply unit from its box and locate the four screws that hold the power supply in place. Remove the screws and set them aside.
      3. Slide the power supply into the case, ensuring that the fan side of the unit is facing towards the back of the case and the output connectors are facing outwards.
      4. Replace the screws to secure the power supply in place.
      5. Reconnect all cables, including the main power cable, to the back of the desktop.
      6. Turn the power switch in the back of the case on.
      7. Switch on the desktop computer and ensure that the power supply is functioning correctly.

          2. Unscrew the four screws on the back of the case that hold the power supply in place.
          3. Slide the old power supply out of the case.
          4. Insert the new power supply, making sure the screw holes line up properly. Secure the power supply with the four screws.
          5. Connect the power supply to the motherboard. This will require connecting several cables, including the power switch, the power LED and data cable, the main power connector, and the peripheral power connectors.
          6. Reconnect the power supply to the wall outlet.
          7. Turn the computer on and check the new power supply to make sure it is functioning correctly.
