International Television Standards

Three primary color standards exist for broadcast television signals. The U.S. and Japan, for example, use the National Television Systems Committee (NTSC) system (standard created in 1941), which is based on a 6-MHz channel width. Most other countries use the 8-MHz channel width Phase Alternating Line (PAL) standard, and France and several Eastern European countries use another 8-MHz based standard known as Systeme Electronique Couleur Avec Memoire (SECAM). In some countries and regions a 7-MHz variant of PAL is used. Still other locations use a mixture of more than one channel format on a single cable network.
