Building Integrated Timing Supply BITS

BITS is a North American term that describes a building-centric timing system. Also referred to as a Synchronization Supply Unit (SSU), the BITS system efficiently manages the number of timing interfaces within a structure. Without something such as BITS/SSU in place, you can feasibly have many different timing sources within the same building because of the number of synchronous links that the building might contain. BITS operates by providing the only ingress and egress external timing connections to the building (typically deployed over a T1 or E1), and then distributing timing internally to all circuits that require it. Figure 14-2 shows the distribution of a BITS timing circuit into a building through either a GPS link or a link to an atomic clock.

BITS systems can also provide external timing links to structures within the same campus, such as a building adjacent to yours that also belongs to your company. Most of these circuits are deployed as T1 or E1 facilities and many vendors provide these interfaces by using coaxial cable connections. Typically, BITS deployment also includes a redundant timing source that is internal to the building in case a timing source is lost. This provides the required equipment uptime, and the redundant supply is taken from the same BITS source.
