Components of an End System Network Topology Diagram

The end system network topology diagram has its focus on the end systems it graphically depicts. It illustrates how end systems are both physically and logically connected to the network. An end system network topology diagram is a graphical presentation of its counterpart end system network configuration table. Nonetheless, it is not practical for a network topology diagram to include every component of the end system network configuration table. Therefore, vital and essential information—such as each end device's name, an illustration of the device, and how it is connected to the network—are depicted without cluttering the diagram (see Figure 2-1). The network information in Figure 2-1 comes from Table 2-3.

The information recorded about each end system in a topology diagram depends on the TCP/IP layer that the device maps to or functions at. Table 2-4 shows for each TCP/IP layer the type of data that you would record about each end system.

The level of detail that an end system topology diagram depicts about network devices varies. An end system-focused topology diagram might represent the network components as a network cloud symbol with the details of the end systems connected to it. On the other hand, all the details of the network device configuration might be included on the same diagram as the end systems. Figure 2-2 shows a topology diagram that includes both network devices and end systems. It includes the following information about end systems:

■ Operating system
