Security Device Manager Overview

As previously mentioned, Cisco SDM provides a Java-based web management tool for easy deployment and monitoring of Cisco IOS routers. The features of SDM include the following:

• Smart wizards Smart wizards intelligently detect incorrect configurations and propose fixes. They also provide industry best practices configuration parameters for IOS services, such as firewall and virtual private network (VPN) features. Smart wizards represent a helpful way for users to deploy a basic implementation of a service without having expert knowledge of the technology. An interactive step-by-step configuration menu gathers the parameters necessary to configure and enable features on the Cisco IOS routers.

• Security audit Cisco SDM also offers security auditing capability to check and provide advice on changes to router configuration, based on International Computer Security Association (ICSA) Labs and Cisco Technical Assistance Center (TAC) recommendations.

• Logical workflow SDM provides a step-by-step menu that guides users through router and security setup of the LAN, WAN, firewall, VPN, and intrusion prevention systems (IPS). It also manages an integrated a suite of router services such as routing, switching, and wireless.
