Installing SDM Software

SDM software may be configured to run from a PC local hard drive or from the router's Flash memory.

The Cisco IOS Software running on a router must support SDM, which is generally supported in Cisco IOS Software Release 12.3 or higher. However, the support is heavily dependent on a combination of hardware platform and software. For up-to-date information about SDM support in Cisco IOS Software and to obtain a copy of Cisco IOS Software, refer to the Cisco.com. The software may be downloaded by providing a valid login account with the appropriate Cisco maintenance contract.

The SDM files are compressed in a zip file. A decompression utility must be installed on the PC to decompress these files.

For the router to support SDM, Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) or Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure (HTTPS), services must be enabled on the router and have authentication, authorization, and accounting (AAA) or local router login account. For enhanced security, use the HTTPS service and disable HTTP on the router. HTTPS is supported in all images that support the Crypto/IPsec feature set, starting in Cisco IOS Software Release 12.2(25)T. Example 23-1 shows an example of the configuration parameters for this configuration.
