Use the ppp authentication command in interface configuration mode to enable PPP authentication. The syntax for the command is as follows:

ppp authentication {protocoll [protocol2...]} [if-needed] [list-name | default] [call [ one-time] [optional]

Table 7-5 shows a description of some of the syntax of this command that is relevant to this chapter.

protocol1 [protocol2... ]

Authentication protocol used for Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP). Available authentication protocols are Challenge Handshake Authentication Protocol (CHAP), Extensible Authentication Protocol (EAP), MS-CHAP version 1, and PAP. To use MS-CHAP version 2 authentication, use the ppp authentication ms-chap-v2 interface configuration command. if-needed

This optional command is used with Terminal Access Controller Access Control System (TACACS) and extended TACACS. It does not perform CHAP or PAP authentication if the user has already provided authentication. It is available only on asynchronous interfaces.


This optional command is used with AAA and specifies the name of a list of methods of authentication to use. If no list name is specified, the system uses the default. The list is created with the aaa authentication ppp command.
