The last functional class of router is the border router. As the name implies, border routers interconnect a network with other networks. It is important to note that a single entity may own and operate multiple autonomous systems. Therefore, a border router may denote the boundary between two autonomous systems rather than the border between a private network and some other network.

Figure 4-4 identifies the border routers in the sample network that has been used in the preceding two figures.
