Authenticated Message Format

Given these conventions, a RIP-2 message with authentication activated would have the following structure:

• A 1-octet Command field

• A 1-octet Version number

• A 2-octet AFI field set to 0xFFFF

• A 2-octet Authentication Type field

• A 16-octet Password field

Figure 9-3 illustrates the authentication message.

To this structure could be added up to 24 RIP-2 routing entries, which contain the following:

• A 4-octet Networking Address (that is, IP address) field

• A 4-octet Subnet Address field

Figure 9-4 illustrates a RIP-2 message with authentication and one routing entry.
