Developing a Network

Learning the location of major hosts, interconnection devices, and network segments is a good way to start developing an understanding of traffic flow. Coupled with data on the performance characteristics of network segments, location information gives you insight into where users are concentrated and the level of traffic a network design must support.

At this point in the network design process, your goal is to obtain a map (or set of maps) of the already-implemented network. Some design customers may have maps for the new network design as well. If that is the case, then you may be one step ahead, but be careful of any assumptions that are not based on your detailed analysis of business and technical requirements.
