EIGRP was developed to be completely independent from routed protocols, such as IP, IPX, and AppleTalk. As such, EIGRP has implemented a modular approach to supporting these routed protocols.
The modular support of EIGRP provides for the following:
• AppleTalk (AT-EIGRP)— EIGRP can redistribute routes learned from Routing Table Maintenance Protocol (RTMP).
• Novell IPX (IPX-EIGRP)— EIGRP can redistribute routes learned from the proprietary RIP as well as Service Advertising Protocol (SAP) and Novell or NLSP.
• IP (IP-EIGRP)— EIGRP can redistribute routes learned from OSPF, RIP, IS-IS, EGP, and BGP.
