The Metro Ethernet Forum is a nonprofit organization that has been active in defining the scope, concepts, and terminology for deploying Ethernet services in the metro. Other standards bodies, such as the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), have also defined ways of scaling Ethernet services through the use of1 MPLS. While the terminologies might differ slightly, the concepts and directions taken by these different bodies are converging.
For Ethernet services, the MEF defines a set of attributes and parameters that describe the service and SLA that are set between the metro carrier and its customer.
