VLAN translation is performed when a frame is modified from one mode to another, such as before the frame is switched to a destination in the same group but with a different VLAN tagging method, for example, for ISL to 802.10. Translation is used when migrating from one VLAN group to a native interface that is not running VLAN. The frame is modified by the router to the appropriate VLAN tagging method. In case of a native packet, the tag is removed by the router so that the packet can go to the native interface.
