Because RIPV1 has been given historic status, it always should be used with simple topologies that have simple reachability. The protocol should be operated in a network that has fixed subnetting and only default routes to connect to the Internet. RIP does not support CIDR, and it does not include any security functions.
In today's complex networking environment, almost no network could be successful, given the limitations mentioned here. Therefore, RIP cannot scale to today's dynamic, fast-converging, fast-paced environment.
