The Need for Security Certification

Security is one of the fastest-growing areas in the industry. Information security is on the top of the agenda for all organizations. Companies have a need to keep information secure, and there is an ever-growing demand for IT professionals who know how to do this. Cisco Systems delivers this by offering CCIE Security certification, setting a professional benchmark in internetworking expertise.

This essential need for security in IT is undeniable. International Data Corporation predicted that the worldwide market for information security services would increase from $5.5 billion to $17.2 billion by 2004.

SANS Institute's projections estimated that less than one in 20 security professionals has the core competence and foundation knowledge to apply appropriate security measures. Equally problematic, about 50,000 IT security positions went unfilled last year.

Here are some more security stats (from Cisco Packet Magazine, First Quarter 2003 issue):

A recent study by Riptech, a real-time information protection company, says network security breaches rose 28 percent during the first half of 2002, compared to the last half of 2001.

A 2002 U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) report reveals that 85 percent of businesses have detected computer security breaches within the last 12 months.
