Principles of a Client Server Network

To design an effective network, it is essential to understand the data flow within a network. Where to place the server relative to the clients should be decided only after considering the following factors:

• The frequency of connection to the server

• The duration of the connection to the server

• The volume of traffic sent across the link to and from the server at a specific moment of the day

• The daily quantified average

Analyzing the traffic patterns over time to create a baseline of the network documents how the network functions today and allows the correct determination of server/client placement. Using standard systems analysis methodology, the status of the network must then be set against the future needs of the organization (to ensure the appropriate design of the network). Understand that the design of the network will directly influence the traffic patterns experienced within the network.
