In the newer routing protocols, summarization must be manually configured; this manual configuration lends greatly to its subtlety and strength. Each routing protocol deals with summarization in a slightly different way, and how summarization works or is configured depends on the routing protocol used. This is discussed in detail in Chapter 4.
NOTE Although Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) and Enhanced IGRP (EIGRP) perform automatic summarization, the summarization is done at the NIC boundary, using the first octet rule. This is the same as with older routing protocols such as RIP.
